Learn How We Can Help You
We offer a wide spectrum of GIS deployment, customization and data-migration services.
Custom Changes
We are ready to help provide additional GIS configuration, process optimization, consultation and software development services. We gained experience by working with the largest electricity and gas companies in the world, which made us establish well-tested practices and improve real-life processes. For us, Agile Manifesto Principles and Scrum methodology is not just theory but a valuable set of processes, which we found fruitful when put into practice in past projects.
Maintenance and Support Service
We provide first-rate maintenance and support services to our customers. We took part in several porting projects where we upgraded the database and Smallworld products from 3.x to 4.x and 4.0 to 4.1 versions. Moreover, one of our success stories includes NRMB porting as a subcontractor of GE Ratingen and NRM Elec / Gas for GE Paris. Last but not least, we provided maintenance & support for a French Electrical distribution company.
Performance Optimisation
With many years of experience under our belt, we effectively targeted individual users’ problems and tracked the solutions our engineers developed in order to make accessible our own Performance Analysis and Optimisation Guide. All this experience enables us to optimize your services and give you solid results. Optimization of Smallworld-based GIS system performance for ENSO is just one of many success stories we have in this field.
Data Digitizing and Compilation
Converting your existing printed maps to GIS format is often an extremely demanding and intimidating process. If mishandled, it can greatly delay the GIS implementation process. We have a year-long experience in the manual digitization of electric and gas networks, as well as the compilation of varied data sources into a unified GIS database. We did data digitization and compilation for Polish, French and Czech gas and electricity distribution companies.
Data Migration
We took part in many data migration projects, which helped us develop a set of processing standards meant to minimize data corruption. Your users will be able to continue their work right after the data migration is completed. One of many projects we completed is the data migration of NRM Dimensioning objects to another dimensioning data model.
Custom Data Translation
Our specialty is GIS file translations between digital spatial formats. We develop translators and provide custom file translation services for offbeat and outdated graphic and attribute formats. One of our biggest achievements is data translation for a French electricity distribution company (from STAR-APIC format to Smallworld database).
Spatial Data Conversion
We convert your existing CAD data to GIS format. We have experience working with dedicated tools created by GE, such as DXF Translator or Spatial Object Managers, as well as other ETL-class tools, such as SafeSoftware FME. We converted DWG, DGN, and DXF files from almost 70 Polish geodesy and cartography authorities using FME scripts.
Data Validation and Correction
Our state-of-the-art processing eliminates typical topology errors such as unmatched intersections, unsnapped lines, duplicated elements and more. We did data validation and correction for Swiss telecom and Polish gas company.
User Training
We provide full support during the life cycle of a project, from planning to system maintenance. We train engineering teams to perform advanced tasks in the delivered solutions and have more control over the project.

We have prepared answers to some of the most common questions asked about Smallworld development:
What is Smallworld?
Smallworld is a product portfolio comprising GIS software supplied by General Electric. Smallworld offers a range of products used for utility, transportation and telecommunications industries. Some of the products offered by Smallworld include Smallworld Electric Office, Smallworld GIS Adapter and Smallworld Physical Network Inventory.
What is your contribution to the development of Smallworld?
Our skilled Smallworld team at Astec helped in the development of all the following products:
• Smallworld 5 products (we were part of GE’s Cambridge core team)
• Smallworld Electric Office 5.1.1 and 5.1.2

What tools for Magik development do you offer?
When it comes to Magik development, Emacs was the industry standard for many years simply because there were no alternatives. Emacs is a text editor, which comes with all the drawbacks of that fact. Many members of the Smallworld community had shown a demand for a more user-friendly, smooth Magik development tool. MDT (Magik Development Tools), the world’s first Magik IDE, is our answer to that demand. Based on Eclipse, MDT boasts a slick user interface and comes with a plethora of features, including but not limited to advanced Magik code editing, an in-built debugger, GIS session management, console, code assist, command history, and many more. Thanks to the SW5 Support Plug-in, MDT supports the newest Smallworld 5. Refer to the official MDT site for more information on the endless possibilities of MDT.
